How did this small community establish a highly successful international film festival with an outstanding selection of more than 40 films? The dynamic individual who sparked and inspired the whole thing praises the tremendous commitment and energy of the volunteers who came forward and made it a reality. The Antigonish International Film Festival, now in its third year, depends upon hardworking and dedicated individuals and organizations. A 75 % jump in attendance occurred between the first and second year; we can only speculative on this year’s increase. The documentaries you will see have been selected out of a deep pool of award-winning films that tackle an enticing array of subjects. The documentary genre is a catalyst for change, especially social, political and cultural transformation, and it ventures into any field, invited or not. In Nova Scotia we have long known that a seed of an idea can spring forth and spread, infecting the world for good — Both the Pugwash Conference, and the Antigonish Movement began in this fertile soil, and there is no reason to believe we’ve exhausted the supply of visionaries with exciting ideas. New leaders and believers are now working to save the planet, feed the hungry, eradicate war, and teach our children compassion for others (the list goes on).

Enjoy the enthusiasm and camaraderie among fellow viewers at this year’s festival. Join each other in  conversation; discussion and debate are encouraged; it could lead to new insights, new friendships, or to revolutionary advances in your own or your companions’ thinking. Conflicting beliefs and ideas are compost for progress; the result can be a nurturing synthesis instead of a schism. Dialogue among people who seek a solution, to advance a cause, or realize a vision is one of the best ways to achieve human progress. Also join us for dinner and discussion on Saturday evening; $15 buys dinner, the table talk is free.

Thank you to all volunteers and supporters who make this film festival happen!
